Best cockatoo for beginners: the Galah and Goffin’s
If this is your first cockatoo, get a Galah or a Goffin’s. Both give you the intelligence and affection the family is famous for, without the extremes of the big white species.
The Rose-Breasted cockatoo (Galah) is our top pick overall. It is hardy, playful and emotionally more robust than the intensely clingy Moluccan or Umbrella, so it copes better with an owner who has a job. It is moderately noisy rather than house-shaking, and at around 14 inches it does not need an aviary. The one thing to watch is diet – galahs put on weight easily, so keep them lean.
The Goffin’s cockatoo is the better choice if you have less space. At about 12 inches it is the smallest true cockatoo, and it is astonishingly clever – a documented tool-user and a notorious escape artist, so buy a cage with proper locks. Give it puzzles and shreddable toys and it will happily entertain itself for stretches, which is exactly what a first-time owner needs.
Best cockatoo for apartments and quieter homes

That said, the Gang Gang cockatoo is the gentlest and quietest of the ten we raise, known for a creaky, door-hinge call rather than a piercing scream. The Goffin’s and Galah are the next most manageable. The Umbrella and Moluccan are not apartment birds under any circumstances.
Best cockatoo for affection: the Umbrella
If what you actually want is the legendary cockatoo cuddle, the Umbrella cockatoo is the bird – a true “velcro bird” that wants to be on you all day. It is also our most affordable large cockatoo, from $800.
The catch is that the affection is the problem. An Umbrella that does not get hours of attention screams and can start plucking its own feathers. Buy one only if someone is home most of the day. The Moluccan is even more affectionate and even more demanding – it is the loudest cockatoo of all.
Best talking cockatoo: the Sulphur-Crested
The Sulphur-Crested cockatoo is the best talker we raise – bold, quick to learn words and household sounds, and a natural show-off.
