Baby cockatoos are irresistible – and understanding how they come into the world helps you become a better, more informed owner. In short: cockatoos usually lay two to three eggs per clutch, incubate them for around 24 to 29 days, and the chicks are then hand-raised or parent-raised until they fully wean at roughly three to four months old. A responsible breeder never sends a baby home before it is weaned and eating on its own.

A cockatoo clutch is small. Most species lay two to three white eggs, though the largest and rarest can lay fewer:

Hand-rearing vs parent-rearing
Baby cockatoos are raised one of two ways, and it shapes the pet they become:
- Hand-raised – the breeder hand-feeds the chick, so it grows up tame, confident and deeply bonded to people. This is why hand-raised babies are in the highest demand and command a premium.
- Parent-raised – the parents do the feeding. These birds are healthy but often take much longer to tame and bond with humans.
Hand-rearing is weeks of round-the-clock work – warm formula every few hours, meticulous hygiene, careful weaning. Done well, it produces the affectionate companion cockatoos are loved for.
Why you should never buy an unweaned baby
This is the most important thing to know. Some sellers offer cheap, unweaned chicks and tell buyers that hand-feeding “bonds” the bird to them. Do not do it. Hand-feeding a baby cockatoo is genuinely difficult and dangerous in inexperienced hands – the risks include crop burn, aspiration (formula in the lungs), and fatal infection. A responsible breeder always fully weans a chick first, so it goes home eating on its own. An unweaned baby offered cheap is a red flag, not a bargain. A young cockatoo is a blank slate – the care you give in the first months shapes its whole life.
