Moluccan Cockatoo: Personality, Care & Facts — My Cockatoo Bird

The Moluccan cockatoo, also called the salmon-crested cockatoo, is the giant of the white cockatoos – a large, soft salmon-pink parrot with a magnificent retractable crest. Native to the island of Seram in Indonesia, it is renowned for being one of the most affectionate and emotionally sensitive of all parrots, and also one of the loudest. It bonds intensely and needs an owner who can match that intensity; for the right, experienced person it is a deeply rewarding, once-in-a-lifetime companion.

Personality and temperament

Moluccans are famously loving, gentle when well-raised, and emotionally deep – they read their owner’s moods and thrive on close contact. But that sensitivity cuts both ways: they are perhaps the most prone of all cockatoos to separation anxiety, screaming and feather-plucking if their considerable social needs are not met. They form powerful one-person bonds and can be territorial in hormonal seasons. In short, they give enormous love and demand a great deal in return, which is why they are best for very experienced keepers.

Care and housing

A Moluccan needs one of the largest, sturdiest cages available, several hours of daily interaction, and relentless enrichment to keep its powerful beak and sharp mind busy. Because they are the loudest cockatoo – see our guide to cockatoo noise – a house with tolerant neighbours is essential. Feed a varied pellet-based diet, protect long nightly sleep, and keep up regular avian vet care, all detailed in our cockatoo care guide.
