Goffin’s Cockatoo: Personality, Care & Facts

Goffin’s Cockatoo: Personality, Care & Facts — My Cockatoo Bird

The Goffin’s cockatoo is the smallest of the true cockatoos and one of the most astonishingly clever – a compact white parrot from Indonesia’s Tanimbar Islands that has become a genuine star of animal-intelligence research. Goffin’s are playful, mischievous, endlessly curious escape artists, famous in studies for spontaneously making and using tools. Their smaller size and slightly more manageable volume make them one of the more apartment-friendly cockatoos, though they are every bit as social and busy as their larger cousins.

We hand-raise Goffin’s cockatoos, so here is an honest profile of this brainy little bird and what keeping one involves.

Personality and temperament

Goffin’s are the problem-solvers of the cockatoo world. They investigate everything, dismantle toys and locks with glee, and are notorious for figuring out how to open cage doors – a securely locking cage is a must. They are affectionate and bond closely, but they are also independent and playful, often happier entertaining themselves with a puzzle than demanding constant cuddles. That intelligence means they get bored fast, so a steady stream of foraging toys and challenges is essential to prevent screaming and plucking.

Care and housing

Despite their smaller size, Goffin’s need a roomy, escape-proof cage, hours of interaction and out-of-cage play, and relentless enrichment for that clever mind. Feed a varied pellet-based diet, protect long nightly sleep, and keep up avian vet care, as covered in our cockatoo care guide. They are quieter than the big white cockatoos but still vocal – see our guide to cockatoo noise – making them one of the better cockatoos for a smaller home.

Price and availability

Goffin’s cockatoos start around $1,000 with us, among the more affordable cockatoos as shown in our cockatoo price guide. Each is hand-raised, DNA-sexed, health-guaranteed and socialised for handling.
